CARMEL MONASTERY IN BETHLEHEM
HOME OF JOY AND PEACE
Carmel Bethlehem
In 1875, Mariam Baouardy led a group of nuns from Pau, France, to establish a Carmel monastery in Bethlehem, with the foundation stone laid on 24 March 1876. The monastery, built on the hill of David, was inaugurated in November 1876, with its chapel completed and blessed in 1892.

Saint Mariam Of Jesus Crucified
Born Mariam Baouardy in Galilee in 1846, was a devout Melkite Catholic who faced immense hardships, including the loss of her parents and a near-fatal attack for refusing to renounce her faith. Guided by profound spiritual experiences, she lived a life of humility and service as a Carmelite nun, founding monasteries in India and Bethlehem. Known for her deep connection with the Holy Spirit, mystical experiences, and the stigmata, she emphasized charity, humility, and trust in God. Despite her short life, she inspired many with her wisdom, visions, and devotion, leaving a legacy of faith and peace. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1983.
